Patient - Inquisitive - Oblivious
From the beginning Nada never fit in with his tribe. He asked too many questions as every answer received brought a new question forth. Often he would beg his masters to repeat their tales of old warriors and whatever sparse knowledge they had about the world beyond their forest. 'Remember your duty,' they'd remind him when they'd tire of his pestering. Yet if they weren't going to indulge him he'd find out for himself. It started out within the boundary of his home. Could he make a more efficient trap for food? Could he create a poultice with easily identifiable plants for his brethren? Could he find a way to relay messages to the main village? While not all of his attempts yielded success, they earned him the admiration of his brethren. His masters were proud of him, but knew their duty bound life would never satisfy him.It wasn't until he realized his mentors were sustaining permanent injuries that he grew restless. From bones that never healed correctly to deteriorating eyesight. Lacking in materials to fully heal them he passionately argued with them to the point of tears. They had accepted their eventual fate as having done their duty.It came as no surprise when he announced his departure. With heavy hearts they bade him farewell and suggested to him a new name, taken from a story they so often repeated to him.Now he spends his days learning all that he can. His obsession is curing ailments that cannot be undone with esuna. With nothing left of his old life save for his tribal tattoos he quietly hopes for the day tradition will break and allow him to see his masters again.
"I'm leaving the forest to pursue answers to questions I have." The man stepped back from the tree and began again, clearing his throat. "I'm leaving the forest to discover the mysteries of the world. No, no that's not it. I'm leaving the forest because I... I must." The young man looked down at the coiling roots of the tree and sighed. "I'm leaving because my soul urges me on. No, that sounds too dramatic.""So your mind is made up then?"Kiurra snapped his head back towards the familiar voice. Erek had come up behind him so quietly he wasn't sure how long he had been standing there. Caught red-handed he looked down ashamed. His heart pounded against his chest as the older viera stepped closer to him and tilted his chin up. There was no emotion on his face except for a twinge of sadness in his eyes."Why are you leaving, Kiurra?"Kiurra hesitated and he could feel himself stammering like a kit being reprimanded."Because... Because-""Because why?" The viera asked gently."Because I feel trapped here!"The older viera's lips parted slightly before pressing firmly together again. Never had he seen Kiurra show emotion, yet here he was on the verge of tears."I want to learn things. I want to help people in need. I want to make things better and I can't... I can't do that here. I can't fulfill a duty I am not passionate about! I don't want to!"Erek's emotionless expression tore at Kiurra who began to cry. "I know we could help Aren if he would just leave the forest! I-I could help him regain more of his sight if I just knew more! And Jon... I could heal his leg fully I just need a little more knowledge, I am so close just- I can't find it here! Don't you want them to feel better?!""Of course I do," the Viera answered quietly, "but our duty is here. It has always been here."Kiurra pulled away, turning back towards the tree and wiped his tears. After he had composed himself Erek spoke softly, "let's go. The others will be worried."
Helpless, Kiurra nodded and followed beside him, his eyes cast down.
-----
"We were beginning to wonder when you'd be back!" Jon said cheerfully."I believe I won the bet," Aren chirped."Fairs, fair." Emil grumbled as he handed him the arrowhead he had been sharpening. Kiurra said nothing as he sat down at the fireside. Jon slapped his back and laughed heartily until he noticed the boy looking melancholy."What's wrong Kiurra?""Nothing. Just tired.""You were up all night fiddling with that little thing you made for staring at the stars," Aren answered with mild amusement. "Did you get it to work yet?""No not yet," he answered as he stared at the fire. "I think I'm going to just go to sleep now.""Oh? Alright. Goodnight Kiurra.""Goodnight," he said as he kept his eyes cast downward."What's wrong with him?" Jon asked in a low voice as he turned back around. The whole time Erek had remained silent and concentrated on the fire until the question was asked. He looked over at Jon and shook his head.Emil was about to speak, but Aren covered his mouth with his hand. All four viera looked down sadly, each knowing what it meant.
-----
"You will never be able to come back! Don't you get it?! We will never see you again! I will never see you again! " Emil shouted at him."That's enough Emil," Aren said firmly, eyeing him. "Kiurra is a man and old enough to make his own decisions. Do you know where to go?" He asked solemnly.Kiurra nodded, his eyes following Emil as he stormed off.Jon watched as the other boy disappeared into the trees before turning back to Kiurra. His voice was serious and it startled Kiurra considering he had always known the man to be jovial."This is a choice you cannot take back no matter what. Do you understand the consequences?""I-I do," he said looking down at the ground.Erek tilted his chin up to meet his gaze."Then go and be happy."
-----
"Kiurra!"The man stopped and turned to see Emil running towards him. He pressed an arrowhead into his hands."Nada."Kiurra tilted his head confused, "I don't-""Nada Kuya. You should take her name. I... I'll look for you in the sky. In the city fires on the horizon. So don't take too long okay? Don't forget us."The older Viera emerged from behind Emil and Kiurra bit his tongue to keep his composure."I will never forget you. Any of you. I promise I will see you again. I-I'll find a way.""I know you will," Erek nodded."We'll walk you to the edge of the forest," Jon said with a smile."One last time," Aren nodded in agreement.Emil took Kiurra's hand and followed alongside him.In silence they walked to their borders, a few hours out now. When the trees grew sparse and a clearing became visible they stopped."So I'll... I'll see you next time," Emil said, his voice trembling as he looked up to Kiurra."Until next time," Kiurra trailed off quietly as he reluctantly let go of the boy's hand.As he came to the last tree Kiurra slowed down, suddenly losing his nerve. Seeing his hesitation Erek walked up to him and gently laid his hand on his back pressing him forward."Our love goes with you wherever you may wander.""My love stays with you all, I promise I'll find a way." Kiurra replied, his voice cracking. With a deep breath he moved forward, his master's hand following him the full length of his step.
Question? Did you have a question?
If it's within the realm of Nada's understanding he has no problem stopping whatever task he is doing to explain. If it's not then he's more than happy to find out with you.How did I end up here?
On occasion Nada will be going towards a destination only to get lost in thought and end up somewhere completely different. Directions are always appreciated.Do you require assistance?
Never without a book or nouliths, Nada is a walking healer if you can manage to get his attention. What was that sound?
That crashing sound very well could've been Nada running into something or dropping his books. What a clumsy man. Unless you're referring to his stomach growling because he's forgotten to eat lunch again.
